Caravan gas bottle checklist for long trips in Australia and NZ

What to check on your caravan or motorhome gas bottles before a long road trip, and how to avoid running out far from a refill station.

Before you leave

Start with full bottles and check the test date on each collar. Make sure bottles are secured upright in their compartment and the compartment vents are clear.

Check connections

Inspect hoses and the regulator for wear. With controls off and bottle valves closed, connect according to the supplier’s instructions; tightening methods vary. Leak-test outdoors using the recommended procedure. If bubbles indicate a leak, close the valve only if safe and do not use the system until resolved. Close valves before driving unless the vehicle manufacturer and local rules explicitly permit gas use on the move with the installed safety equipment.

Plan your refills

In remote areas, swap or refill points can be far apart. Note likely refill stops along your route and top up when you have the chance rather than waiting until a bottle is empty.

Know your usage

Your fridge, hot water and stove all draw on the same bottles. Note when each bottle is changed so you learn how many days a bottle lasts for your setup.

Watch the level on the road

A WiseTank Bluetooth sensor sits under a steel bottle and shows the level in the TANK IOT app when your phone is nearby, so you may be able to check from inside the van, depending on reception through the locker and vehicle; test it at your installation. It needs a flat area in the centre of the bottle base and does not suit aluminium or composite bottles.
