Patio gas for barbecues: how to stop your bottle running out mid-cook
What patio gas is, how much a barbecue really uses, and a simple routine to make sure your bottle doesn’t run dry halfway through the sausages.
What “patio gas” actually is
Patio gas is propane sold in bottles intended for barbecues and patio heaters, commonly in 5 kg and 13 kg sizes. Because it is propane, it works in cooler weather, which suits the British barbecue season. Patio gas bottles usually need a clip-on regulator that matches the bottle’s valve, so check compatibility when you change supplier.
How much does a barbecue use?
Look at the rating plate or manual for the barbecue’s total heat input in kW. As a rough guide, 1 kg of propane contains about 13.8 kWh of energy. A 3-burner barbecue rated at 9 kW running flat out would therefore use around 0.65 kg an hour — so a 5 kg bottle gives roughly 7–8 hours at full power, a 13 kg bottle roughly 20.
Fewer burners or lower settings reduce hourly consumption. Wind, cold or an open lid may increase the time or heat setting needed to cook, but do not automatically increase consumption at a fixed setting. Follow the barbecue manufacturer’s instructions for lid position.
A pre-barbecue routine
Check the level the day before you host, not when the flame drops. Read your compatible level sensor or weigh a portable bottle safely. Before moving a portable bottle, turn off the appliance, close the bottle valve and disconnect according to the supplier’s instructions. Keep it upright, use scales rated for its full weight and subtract the tare in matching units, allowing for accessories not included in the tare. Do not lift a connected bottle or attempt to weigh a heavy installed cylinder yourself. UK tare markings may be in pounds and ounces; convert them to kilograms if needed. If you have less than one session’s worth, swap or refill in good time, and keep a spare stored upright, outside and away from drains.
Will a level sensor fit my patio gas bottle?
Many patio gas bottles are steel, but some lightweight bottles are composite or plastic-cased and the magnet will not hold. The sensor needs a flat centre on the base for its 72 mm width. If in doubt, send us a photo of the base before you reserve.
