Gas bottle tare weight: how to weigh what’s left
Where to find the tare weight on a UK gas bottle, how to weigh it, and how to turn the reading into a percentage.
What tare weight means
Tare weight is the weight of the empty bottle, including the valve. It is stamped into the collar or shown on a label, often marked “T” or “Tare”, sometimes with the gas content (e.g. “13 kg propane”) nearby.
Weigh, subtract, divide
Gas left = scale reading − tare, allowing for accessories not included in the tare. Percentage = gas left ÷ full fill × 100. Use matching units: UK tare markings may be in pounds and ounces, so convert if needed. Example: tare 7.5 kg, fill 6 kg, reading 10.5 kg → 3 kg left, which is 50%.
Before moving a portable bottle, turn off the appliance, close the bottle valve and disconnect according to the supplier’s instructions. Keep it upright, use scales rated for its full weight and subtract the tare in matching units, allowing for accessories not included in the tare. Do not lift a connected bottle or attempt to weigh a heavy installed cylinder yourself. UK tare markings may be in pounds and ounces; convert them to kilograms if needed.
When weighing becomes a pain
Heavy bottles, bottles chained in a cage or wedged in a caravan locker are awkward to weigh often. A sensor under a steel bottle gives you the level on your phone instead.
