Gas bottle level indicators compared: which type tells you what’s really left?

Pressure gauge: simple, but not a reliable measure of LPG remaining or a dependable near-empty warning; temperature and gas composition affect the reading. Thermal strip: cheap, shows a rough level, needs a temperature difference to work. Scales: useful if you know the tare weight. Before moving a portable bottle, turn off the appliance, close the bottle valve and disconnect according to the supplier’s instructions. Keep it upright, use scales rated for its full weight and subtract the tare in matching units, allowing for accessories not included in the tare. Do not lift a connected bottle or attempt to weigh a heavy installed cylinder yourself. UK tare markings may be in pounds and ounces; convert them to kilograms if needed. Ultrasonic sensor: reads the actual liquid height and sends it to your phone, at a higher price.
Which suits you?
If you use one small bottle for summer barbecues, scales are hard to beat. If the bottle is in a caravan locker, a garden cage or runs your heating or cooking, a compatible sensor may reduce trips outside and help plan replacements, provided the connection works at the installation.
What to check before buying an ultrasonic sensor
Material: it must be a steel bottle — the sensor holds on with a magnet. Base: the centre must be flat for a 72 mm sensor. Tilt: the bottle should stand level (under about 8.5°). Connection: Bluetooth needs your phone nearby; WiFi needs a 2.4 GHz network and a socket.
A level indicator does not detect leaks and does not replace a gas safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
